§16
If the essence of cynicism consist of preferring nature to art, virtue to beauty and knowledge; of being oblivious of the letter, to which the Stoic clings so rigidly, and focusing entirely on the spirit; of absolutely despising every economic standard and political pomp, and maintaining bravely the rights of an independent will: then Christianity is really nothing but universal cynicism.
